Retail forecasters believe that the recession will have a significant impact on most families’ back-to-school budgets this year. They expect a decline of about 8 percent from last year for overall spending on students in grades K through 12. Except in one area: electronics. It’s expected that laptops, printers and other electronics are now considered so important that total spending in this area will actually increase.
The forecast was prepared by a retailing trade group; they are estimating that the average family will spend $204.67 on clothing and accessories, $93.59 on shoes, and $82.62 on school supplies.

As a parent, it’s hard to believe that I’ll be spending less money on supplies as most schools give parents/kids a list of necessary supplies. God help the poor kid who shows up without them!
