Physical education is supposed to help kids get in shape, but a new study has found the number of injuries in gym class is on the rise.

The study found that injuries increased by 150 percent — from 24,000 in 1997 to 64,000 in 2007. The report was published in the medical journal Pediatrics and it looked at more than 400,000 injuries that required a trip to the hospital. 98 percent of those visits resulted in a quick discharge. Not surprisingly, 75 percent of the injured were boys.

Are kids really getting injured more often? Or are schools just so mindful of the litigious times we live in that they’d rather call an ambulance than have a parent call a lawyer?
